The National SOGIE Center and the E4 Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging are committed to assuring that all older adults get optimal healthcare and have created an animated short outlining best practices for providers to assure equitable and LGBTQ+ affirming care for all.

Understanding Substance Use Disparities Among LGBTQ+ Individuals

This animation, created by the National SOGIE Center in partnership with the Opioid Response Network, explores the unique challenges of substance use within LGBTQ+ populations. It highlights disparities in substance use, examines the underlying contributors such as minority stress, stigma, and systemic inequities, and offers evidence-based best practices to guide providers in delivering affirming and inclusive care. 

While this animation provides a concise overview, the full-length training includes in-depth scenarios and expanded guidance. Providers who wish to access the complete training can submit a technical assistance (TA) request through the Opioid Response Network

Support for LGBTQ+ Youth Starts at Home: An Animation on the Importance of Family Acceptance

This animated short focuses on the impact of rejection children, youth and young adults can experience in their homes and communities and provides examples and strategies to promote support, acceptance and affirmation of youth with diverse SOGIE. The video shows two scenarios of common reactions from family members related to their child’s SOGIE and offers alternative responses that acknowledge what the family member might be thinking, while also safeguarding the young person’s wellbeing.
